THE FIVE NOMINEES:
THE WINNER:
NICOLAS
CAGE
"ADAPTATION"
JACK
NICHOLSON
"ABOUT SCHMIDT"
DANIEL
DAY-LEWIS
"GANGS OF NEW YORK"
MICHAEL
CAINE
"THE QUIET AMERICAN"
ADRIEN
BRODY
"THE PIANIST"
FOR HIM:
FOR HIM:
FOR HIM:
FOR HIM:
FOR HIM:
Portraying
identical twins at
odds in life, there
wasn't a funnier
turn this year.
The raves kept coming in,
and the performance is
seen as one of the best in
his long career.  Plus,
older voters can identify.
He received career-best
reviews with a morally
conflicting role.  He's also
an Academy favorite with
many prior noms & wins.
He carries this
emotional film entirely
on his shoulders.
Voters may reward the
one virgin nominee.
He's gotten even more raves
than publicity-hogging Jack
Nicholson.  His character is
likely to go down as one of
cinema's most evil villains.
THE LOWDOWN:
Adrien Brody claims victory over predicted winner Daniel Day-Lewis.  Making Oscar history, Brody becomes the
youngest winner in this category and the only un-awarded actor to go up against 4 previous winners and take the big
prize.  His speech was perhaps one of the best of the night, acknowledging his teary-eyed mother, arguing for peace, and
telling the band to shut up and stop playing.
DIDN'T MAKE THE CUT THIS YEAR:
ROBIN
WILLIAMS
"ONE HOUR PHOTO"
His new "creepy" image
was perfected in this
sentimental yet
terrifying performance.
RICHARD
GERE
"CHICAGO"
The Globe win certainly
helps, but his screen
time is very small.  Still,
SAG took notice.
KIERAN
CULKIN
"IGBY GOES DOWN"
Surprise Golden Globe
noms for him and
Sarandon indicate
support for the film.
RALPH
FIENNES
"SPIDER"
A one-week qualifying
run is set for this David
Cronenberg thriller.
Will it make big waves?
ADAM
SANDLER
"PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE"
It's highly unlikely he'll get
nominated...but what a
career-transforming
performance it was.
TOM
HANKS
"ROAD TO PERDITION"
He's been sequeezed out
of both categories for
mostly "just okay"
performances.
DENNIS
QUAID
"THE ROOKIE"
Long career plus
subdued performance
in a suprise family hit
for Disney.
GREG
KINNEAR
"AUTO FOCUS"
He's completely
thrown himself into
this haunting role.
Is it too risque?
KEVIN
KLINE
"EMPEROR'S CLUB"
Like "Moonlight Mile,"
it's a sappy film that
could swing either way
with AMPAS members.
EDWARD
NORTON
"25th HOUR"
It will be hard for voters to
ignore this fiery and
emotional turn -- unless
there's Spike Lee backlash.
LEONARDO
D
ICAPRIO
"CATCH ME IF YOU CAN"
Will this performance stick
out, or will he cancel
himself with "Gangs of
New York" votes?
SAM
ROCKWELL
"CONFESSIONS OF..."
There's usually one
unfamiliar face in the
crowd of nominees.
His could be it.
DEREK
LUKE
"ANTWONE FISHER"
Though shut out at the
Globes, the film will be a
sleeper hit with audiences
and he plays the role well.

ADAPTED S'PLAY
CAMPBELL
SCOTT
"ROGER DODGER"
Despite his family
pedigree and NBR
win, the film doesn't
scream Oscar.
Does Jack really need a
fourth Oscar?  Enough
already.  Plus, support for
"Schmidt" seems lacking;
it only scored 2 nods.
AGAINST HIM:
An anti-American
character probably won't
sit well with voters amid
our current political
climate during voting time.
AGAINST HIM:
Or not.  Everyone else
on this shortlist has
won before.  It seems
like a year of repeated
recognition.
AGAINST HIM:
He lost the Golden Globe to
Jack -- which could be a
sign of bad things to come.
His character isn't as likeable
as some of the others.
AGAINST HIM:
Though he's great
in the film, he
hasn't been great
in much else
lately.
