THE FIVE NOMINEES:
UPDATED FEBRUARY 23
THE WINNER:
JUDE
LAW
"COLD
MOUNTAIN"
JOHNNY
DEPP
"PIRATES OF THE
CARIBBEAN"
BEN
KINGSLEY
"HOUSE OF
SAND & FOG"
SEAN
PENN
"MYSTIC
RIVER"
FOR HIM:
His grandly funny
appearance at the Golden
Globes raises his profile
considerably.  What codgy
reputation?
After a long career of
oddball yet memorable
roles, Depp turned his
undead swashbuckler into
an inimitable character.
Handling an accent
assuredly, Kingsley tackles a
difficult role with ease.
Some are even calling it his
best performance ever.
AGAINST HIM:
AGAINST HIM:
Him or Sean Penn?
Comedy or drama?  With
choices like that for voters
to make, you can bet they'll
take serious over sportive.
His disdain for
awards is no secret,
and he pulled a
no-show at the
Globes.
His character is a pretty
ruthless man, and does a few
things in the film -- like
slapping his wife -- that may
give voters pause.
NO NOM THIS YEAR:
RUSSELL
CROWE
"MASTER & COMMANDER"
Though the film picked up steam
from the Globes and the guilds,
most people still aren't throwing
his name about.
TOM
CRUISE
"THE LAST SAMURAI"
Even those that enjoyed the
movie aren't entirely thrilled
with his somewhat stiff
performance.
PAUL
GIAMATTI
"AMERICAN SPLENDOR"
The performance won a few
critics' awards, but he'll be
competing with Murray for
the "indie" spot.

MICHAEL
CAINE
"THE STATEMENT"
It will probably be tough for
him to snag consecutive
nominations, especially since
both are for tiny films.
PADDY
CONSIDINE
"IN AMERICA"
Without a Golden Globe
nomination, this relatively
unknown actor may be unable
to compete with the A-list.

B
E
HAYDEN
CHRISTIANSEN
"SHATTERED GLASS"
He's really too young to
sneak into the Final 5,
but if the rest of the
competition falls off...

MAGUIRE
"SEABISUIT"
The role may not be large
enough to fit in this
category, and voters may
forget by year's end.
JEFF
BRIDGES
"SEABISCUIT"
He would've fared better in the
Best Supporting Actor
category since the competition
here is very tough.
FOR HIM:

AGAINST HIM:
FOR HIM:
AGAINST HIM:
FOR HIM:
AGAINST HIM:
He survived the "Cold
Mountain" cleave, so
there must be a good
reason why voters
spared him.
His performance is
more responsive than
showy.  That hurts
when faced with this
year's competition.
The film itself is...a Jerry
Bruckheimer production.
Bill Murray will surely eat
at votes going to a
comedic performance.
BILL
MURRAY
"LOST IN
TRANSLATION"
This is the
performance that
some are calling the
best of the year and
best of his career.
JACK
NICHOLSON
"SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE"
He's a continual Oscar nominee,
but on the heels of last year's
relatively dark "About Schmidt,"
will voters go for this comedy?
