THE FIVE NOMINEES:
THE WINNER:
NICOLE
KIDMAN
"THE HOURS"
SALMA
HAYEK
"FRIDA"
DIANE
LANE
"UNFAITHFUL"
JULIANNE
MOORE
"FAR FROM HEAVEN"
RENEE
ZELLWEGER
"CHICAGO"
With a Golden Globe
in tow, she must be
considered the
frontrunner despite
the SAG loss.
Like Will Smith in "Ali"
last year, biographical
pet projects always
seem to grab Oscar's
attention.
The fact that her
performance stayed in
voters' minds since
last spring attests to
her loyal supporters.
She's won almost every
precursor award and got
the reviews of a lifetime.
Like many are agreeing, it's
her year.
A Golden Globe win
proved she is indeed in
contention for the big
prize.  The SAG win
certainly helps her.
Hayek's film garnered
the least acclaim of her
competitors.  Will she
ever play this strong of
a role again?
THE LOWDOWN:
Nicole Kidman wins as predicted.  Perhaps the only way that the Academy faltered this year (while doing a surprisingly
large number of things
right for once) was by letting Julianne Moore go home empty-handed.  Kidman was great in "The
Hours," but she's relatively new to the awards scene and will have about 5 more chances in the next few years to win an
Oscar judging by her upcoming slate.  Denzel Washington, when opening the Best Actress envelope, continued the
long-running pun that she would win "by a nose."
DIDN'T MAKE THE CUT THIS YEAR:
SAMANTHA
MORTON
"MORVERN CALLAR"
This indie pic is flying
a bit under the radar
right now.  It'll
probably get forgotten.
CATE
BLANCHETT
"HEAVEN"
It's an understated
performance that
never broke out of
limited release.
JENNIFER
ANISTON
"THE GOOD GIRL"
The lack of a Golden
Globe nom basically
spells doom for her
once-bright chances.
CATHERINE
KEENER
"LOVELY & AMAZING"
This was the best of
several films she had in
'02.  She'll need the
critics on her side.
MAGGIE
GYLLENHAAL
"SECRETARY"
Her "for your consideration" ads
hit the trades first.  In a weaker
year for this category, she might
have been a welcome surprise.
NIA
VARDALOS
"MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING"
She needed the Golden Globe win
to even think of fitting into this
tight category.  A screenplay
nomination should do.
MERYL
STREEP
"THE HOURS"
She's great as part of this
emsemble, but better to
spread the wealth -- she's
a shoo-in for "Adaptation."
SIGOURNEY
WEAVER
"THE GUYS"
Another one-week
qualifier.  Its 9/11
themes are topical,
but the film's small.

ADAPTED S'PLAY
FOR HER:
AGAINST HER:
It's likely she'll get
nominated next
year, and Julianne's
had stronger buzz.
Is Kidman a lead?
FOR HER:
AGAINST HER:
Right now, Best
Actress seems to be a
2-way race between
Kidman and Moore.
Lane's nod
is a prize.
FOR HER:
AGAINST HER:
If voters want to see both
her and Kidman win, they
may throw Moore's votes
in favor of her "Hours"
performance.
FOR HER:
AGAINST HER:
Comedy doesn't always
sink in with Oscar voters,
and her role doesn't have
the historical depth of
some of the other women.
