THE WINNER:
KEISHA
CASTLE-HUGHES
"WHALE
RIDER"
DIANE
KEATON
"SOMETHING'S
GOTTA GIVE"
FOR HER:
She's a legend, no two
ways about it.  Plus
she stands out in this
otherwise pedestrian
comedy.
Nearly every critic has
called her turn fierce
and unflinching.  Plus,
she was snubbed for
"Mulholland Drive."
Aside from the
makeup, Theron
literally became serial
killer Aileen Wuornos
in a chilling turn.
Her character is
probably the one voters
can identify with most
easily -- a fiercely
devoted young mother.
AGAINST HER:
The nomination is
more of an
acknowledgment that
Keaton's still a vibrant
force.  This isn't an
Oscar vehicle.
Her character is ruthless
and sometimes
unlikeable -- not
necessarily the best
traits for someone
seeking the gold.
Some are calling the
performance "just" a
makeup trick.  The
film itself isn't as good
as she is.
Her chances to win
might have been better
had "In America" also
gotten a Best Picture
nomination.
NO NOM THIS YEAR:
CATE
BLANCHETT
"VERONICA GUERIN"
The thing prevented her from getting
a nom
yet again wasn't the lackluster
response to her films -- it was the
vote-splitting with "The Missing."
EVAN
RACHEL WOOD
"THIRTEEN"
She just wasn't the young
performer the Oscars singled
out this year -- 13-year-old
Keisha Castle-Hughes was.

Y
UMA
THURMAN
"KILL BILL, VOL. I"
The performance is worthy,
but its physicality might
overshadow the emotional
elements.
GWYNETH
PALTROW
"SYLVIA"
Although this nomination
makes sense, early buzz on
the film was not as great as it
could have been.
PATRICIA
CLARKSON
"THE STATION AGENT"
Last-minute campaign changes
are never a good thing, but this
was a strong performance, so
you never know.  SAG helps.
JENNIFER
CONNELLY
"HOUSE OF SAND & FOG"
Support slowly drifted away
from her performance and her
film, leaving her without a
nomination.
JAMIE
LEE CURTIS
"FREAKY FRIDAY"
She'll be competing for the
"comedy spot" with Diane
Keaton and Helen Mirren.
Good luck.

THERON
SCARLETT
JOHANSSON
"GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING"
She was nearly mute in the film, but
it-girl Johansson embodied Griet
with perfect measures of stoicism
and resignment.

AGAINST HER:
From almost out of nowhere,
this young Kiwi discovery
became the youngest person ever
nominated for the Best Actress
award.  Could she upset?
Overcoming the age hurdle was
reward enough. Might there be
residual anger that fellow young
women Scarlett Johansson and
Evan Rachel Wood got dissed?
