FOR HER
FOR HER
FOR HER
FOR HER
It's a literal
knockout
performance,
and she hits
some powerful
emotional
tones in the
pic's final
reels.  The
Globe is a plus.
She's aged
gracefully on
the screen,
and everyone
remembers her
surprise loss
for 1999's
"American
Beauty" -- to
Hilary Swank.
She's reaped
the lion's share
of critics'
awards, if that
means
anything.
Might she
upset if Hilary
and Annette
split the vote?
She mixes
laughs with
tears while
expertly
stepping out of
her famed
"corset" roles.
Most agree the
film is an A+
success.
She battled out
some
heavyweights
for a SAG nom.
 Her turn has
been deemed
the debut of
the year by
several critics'
groups.
AGAINST HER
AGAINST HER
AGAINST HER
AGAINST HER
AGAINST HER
Two Oscars for
an actress
who's still
relatively "new"
seems a bit
much.  Her
filmography
leaves much to
be desired
("The Core"?).
Though at one
point she
seemed like
the leader, the
sudden surge
by "Million
Dollar Baby"
has put her win
in severe
doubt.
The film
performed
badly at the
box office even
for a Mike
Leigh film.
How will the
Academy take
to an abortion
pic?
"Sunshine" lost
much of its
early-year
steam beneath
the "Sideways"
steamroller,
and it's pretty
quirky
regardless of
that.
A nod for her
first major film,
and it's
subtitled?
Sounds like
reward enough
for this
Colombian
acting
debutante.

UMA THURMAN, Kill Bill, Vol. II
Without that SAG nod, she became pretty vulnerable.

EMMY ROSSUM, Phantom of the Opera
Critics were split, and the category was crowded as it is.

JULIE DELPY, Before Sunset
It's true -- smaller films almost never get recognized.

JULIA ROBERTS, Closer
One of her better performances, but critics/auds didn't agree.

LAURA DERN, We Don't Live Here Anymore
Another example of a worthy nominee "stuck" in a small film.

AUDREY TAUTOU, A Very Long Engagement
This nod was always pretty shaky to begin with.

TEA LEONI, Spanglish
James L. Brooks misfired with this comedy.  No nod for Tea.
