With Payne
unlikely to
take home the
Best Director
prize, voters
may prefer to
reward his
well-reviewed
picture in this
category.
AGAINST IT
AGAINST IT
AGAINST IT
AGAINST IT
AGAINST IT
This
screenwriting
duo was a
supposed lock
for 2002's
"About
Schmidt," yet
came out with
nothing to
show for it.
Too much
attention has
been paid to
the direction of
Clint Eastwood
and the acting
of Hilary Swank
to make the
writing a real
awards factor.
As is the
charge with
every biopic
that's
released,
misgivings
about the
author's "real
life" are
glossed over.
A major minus
is that the film
is subtitled.
Aside from the
win by 2002's
"Talk to Her,"
few
non-English
pics are able to
claim victory.
What exactly is
it adapted
from?  Just
because it's a
sequel doesn't
mean it's
based on
material
"previously
published."

PATRICK MARBER, Closer
Many argued that it was barely adapted from the play.

TINA FEY, Mean Girls
Good reviews, WGA nod, but too lightweight?

TOD WILLIAMS, Door in the Floor
A later release date could've helped this gem gain traction.

D. COHEN & P. BERG, Friday Night Lights
Sports dramas aren't usually loved by the Academy.

J.P. JEUNET & G. LAURANT, A Very Long Engagement
This got even less attention than its foreign brethren.

JOHN CURRAN, We Don't Live Here Anymore
It needed precursor support that didn't come.

RONALD HARWOOD, Being Julia
Only Annette Bening's performance gathered much acclaim.

FOR IT
FOR IT
Haggis' script
won the
prestigious
Scripter Prize
instead of the
buzzed-about
"Sideways."
This might be
the only place
to fete "Baby."
A movie about
writing would
seem like a
natural lock in
this category.
Movies about
show business
in general are
remarkably
popular.
Ineligible in
the Best
Foreign Film
race, voters
may choose to
honor this
critical hit with
a screenplay
award as a
consolation.
It feels like the
ultimate
underdog after
missing out on
major
precursors but
snaring a
high-profile
WGA
nomination.
