THE CONSTANT
GARDENER
FOR IT
FOR IT
Throughout the
past decade,
the writers'
branch has
proven itself to
be more
adventurous
than the
Academy at
large.
Universally
excellent
reviews pretty
much ensured
a nod.  The
question is, will
it be able to
overtake
"Brokeback"
for the win?
Despite the
film's mixed
response,
there were
many powerful
scenes -- such
as the stairway
debate -- that
resonated with
audiences.
This thriller was
expertly
translated from
the comic page
to the big
screen.  It's
spare, tense,
and riveting --
an excellent
choice.
This taut
political thriller
scored
screenplay
noms from all
the right
groups and is
riding high on
Rachel Weisz's
coattails.
AGAINST IT
AGAINST IT
AGAINST IT
AGAINST IT
AGAINST IT
Though the
screenplay
took the WGA
award, it didn't
win some of
the other key
screenplay
prizes.  A loss
here wouldn't
be a shock.
Probably not.
It's a rather
small and
insular title
competing
against a
pop-culture
phenomenon.
The nod's a
consolation.
The pic's
low-wattage
campaign may
have hindered
its chances in
every category
for which it's a
contender.
The buzz just
isn't there.
Without a Best
Picture nod
attached, it
looks doubtful
that
"Gardener" will
be able to
brush aside
the other
contenders.
Some are
guessing that
the only
reason this
script snuck in
is because of
the "Syriana"
category
switch.  A
shame.

GILL DENNIS & JAMES MANGOLD, Walk the Line
People weren't raving over the script.

DEBORAH MOGGACH, Pride & Prejudice
Many were surprised at how good this Austen adaptation turned out.

ROBIN SWICORD & TEAM, Memoirs of a Geisha
No Best Picture nod = no screenplay nod.

PETER JACKSON, FRAN WALSH, & PHILIPPA BOYENS, King Kong
Well, "The Return of the King" won an Oscar in this category...

STEVE MARTIN, Shopgirl
It never gained traction during the season.

WILLIAM BROYLES, Jarhead
The reviews were just O.K. -- so we'll wait for Mendes' next effort.

SUSANNAH GRANT, In Her Shoes
The film had a few fans among critics.
