Conversations
With Clarkson

HIGH ART
I told her, "You're the only actress I know that's
pretty much consistently good in everything you're
in."  (Too much?)  "I just saw 'The Safety of
Objects' and you were great in it."  She replied,
"Oh, you were one of the four?"  (Why didn't more
people see it?  Easy nomination for Glenn Close had
it been released in December.)  "You were robbed
of an Oscar nomination for 'Far From Heaven!'  I
told my mom to see it and she loved it.  She cried.
It wasn't for everyone, but it was my favorite
movie of 2002."  Another courteous response from
her:  "Thank you.  It means a lot that you like my
work so much."
A full-fledged conversation now:  "So what's
it like to be so close to a nomination and not
get it?"  "It's not really about the nomination
itself -- although it's a great thing -- but it
gives you the freedom to do other projects
that weren't even possible before.  Projects
that you really feel strongly about but that
wouldn't get made otherwise."  We talked for
a few more minutes and I wished her luck
with a nomination this year; who would've
guessed that "Pieces of April" would do it?
A week or so later I was with friends at LAX about to
get on a flight home for Thanksgiving.  We stepped up
on the curb and -- lo and behold -- Patricia Clarkson
was running by (in her "Station Agent" hat) looking
late for a flight.  I briefly thought, "Should I stop her
and say 'hello'?  She seems busy and would probably
get annoyed if I bothered her at the airport."  So I
didn't say anything.  I think I should have.
(Nonetheless, I saw Jake Gyllenhaal and Tom Morello
of Rage Against the Machine before I eventually got
on my flight.)  Oh, and to throw in one more Clarkson
pun using "Pieces of April" -- I'm an Aries.

The objects in question were several gin and
tonics.  They give you that "safety net" of
being able to talk to people you would
normally be too shy around -- such as
celebrities at MGM's November open house.
After milling around for an hour or so, I
saw a small clique gathered by the drink
cart:  Oliver Platt and Katie Holmes.  I
thought to myself, "Pieces of April" is an
MGM/UA movie...so Patricia Clarkson must
either be here or be on her way.  Sure
enough, she showed up, and during a break
in the group's conversation I very humbly
introduced myself as a big fan of her work...
