FOR HIM
FOR HIM
FOR HIM
He has a DGA
award to show
for his efforts,
and that's the
biggest plus --
50 of the 56
previous
winners have
gone on to win
the Oscar.
If there's any
living auteur
"due" for an
Oscar, he's the
one.  Plus, the
movie is a
bright and
entertaining
slice of Old
Hollywood.
He had a
vision, wrote a
script, cast it
perfectly, and
crafted it with
style.  The
critics and
indie-loving
audiences are
on his side.
He pulled a
shocking upset
over some
more popular
names by
landing this
nod.  He's
clearly an
Academy
favorite.
Fellow
filmmakers
love to see the
passion of
developing a
story over
many years
and seeing it
to fruition.
And Foxx.
AGAINST HIM
AGAINST HIM
AGAINST HIM
AGAINST HIM
AGAINST HIM
After winning
Best Director
for
"Unforgiven,"
voters may be
unwilling to
hand Eastwood
a repeat
victory.  Spread
the wealth.
Academy
members don't
like to be
bullied into
giving out an
Oscar.  And the
all-important
DGA award
went to
Eastwood.
Though he has
a number of
accomplished
films under his
belt, Payne is
still a newbie in
terms of Oscar
glory.  He
needs a vote
split to win.
No Best Picture
mention = no
Oscar chances.
 Though his
film did score 3
nods overall,
every other
director's
movie got
more.
There's not
much in the pic
that signifies a
strong
directorial hand
when
compared to
the work of
Eastwood or
Scorsese.

MARC FORSTER, Finding Neverland
Tradition holds true; one director always gets left off.

ZHANG YIMOU, House of Flying Daggers
He couldn't pull a Pedro Almodovar/Fernando Mereilles.

MICHEL GONDRY, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
His contributions have been forgotten amid Kaufman praise.

TERRY GEORGE, Hotel Rwanda
People remembered Don Cheadle's performance more.

MICHAEL MANN, Collateral
He had a few ardent supporters and an NBR victory.

MIKE NICHOLS, Closer
The film was very hit-or-miss in the precursor race.

MICHAEL MOORE, Fahrenheit 9/11
AMPAS members don't like to get too political.
