I got out xx out of 40 in the Big 8; xx out of xx overall
BEST PICTURE
The big question is whether the near-shutout of Letters From Iwo Jima
at the guilds means Clint's WWII epic is doomed at the Oscars.  I say
yes, at least in the big categories.  The 5 pics I have listed below have
been pretty much the set list for a long time, so any omission
amongst them would be a shock.
PREDICTIONS
Babel
The Departed
The Queen
Little Miss Sunshine
Dreamgirls
BEST DIRECTOR
These match up 4 for 5 with the films above, but I think Paul
Greengrass will be able to sneak in for
United 93 instead of
husband-and-wife duo Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris for
Little
Miss Sunshine.
But a lot of other (Latino) names could pop up instead
-- Alfonso Cuaron, Pedro Almodovar, Guillermo del Toro.
PREDICTIONS
Alejandro Inarritu, Babel
Martin Scorsese, The Departed
Stephen Frears, The Queen
Paul Greengrass, United 93
Bill Condon, Dreamgirls
BEST ACTOR
This list ain't changing, but I wish Sacha Baron Cohen in Borat would
be able to sneak in instead of Peter O'Toole.  Is anyone talking about
Venus?  Is it one of O'Toole's best performances?  If Anthony Hopkins
had been in it, would it even been on the awards radar?  Things to
ponder when Cohen gets snubbed.
PREDICTIONS
Ryan Gosling, Half Nelson
Forest Whitaker, Last King of Scotland
Peter O'Toole, Venus
Leonardo DiCaprio, The Departed
Will Smith, The Pursuit of Happyness
BEST ACTRESS
Like in 2000 when a fivesome of Julia Roberts, Juliette Binoche, Ellen
Burstyn, Joan Allen, and Laura Linney were locked into the 5 slots all
season long, the five women below are good to go.  I never got
around to seeing
Sherrybaby, but I bet Maggie Gyllenhaal deserves
to be on this list.
PREDICTIONS
Helen Mirren, The Queen
Penelope Cruz, Volver
Meryl Streep, The Devil Wears Prada
Kate Winslet, Little Children
Judi Dench, Notes on a Scandal
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Also in serious contention:  Brad Pitt, Djimon Hounsou, Michael Sheen,
and even Ben Affleck and Steve Carell.  This has been the most volatile
category all season long, and I'd say only Jack and Eddie Murphy are
locks -- and I can even see Jack being a surprise snub.  This will be fun
to watch.
PREDICTIONS
Alan Arkin, Little Miss Sunshine
Jack Nicholson, The Departed
Mark Wahlberg, The Departed
Jackie E. Haley, Little Children
Eddie Murphy, Dreamgirls
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Another set of 5 that seems set in stone.  Aside from Catherine
O'Hara in
For Your Consideration, I can't imagine another actress
making a serious run for the shortlist.  The award-givers need to start
looking outside the box for their choices; it's boring to see to the
same names pop up again and again.  Duh.
PREDICTIONS
Rinko Kikuchi, Babel
Adriana Barraza, Babel
Jennifer Hudson, Dreamgirls
Abigail Breslin, Little Miss Sunshine
Cate Blanchett, Notes on a Scandal
BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
This category could provide some jolts on nomination morning.  Pan's
Labyrinth
and Stranger Than Fiction are far from locked, and it
wouldn't shock me to see some left-field choice that hasn't even been
on the radar pop up with a nod.  Then again, something guessable like
Letters From Iwo Jima could end up here, too.
PREDICTIONS
Little Miss Sunshine
Pan's Labyrinth
Stranger Than Fiction
Babel
The Queen
BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
Please be Borat.  I've decided to exclude Dreamgirls, as much of the
criticism of the musical seems to be its clunky transition from stage to
screen (to which I'd agree).  But aside from
The Departed, none of
these even has a shot at the eventual win.  William Monahan better be
polishing up his acceptance speech.
