CRASH
FOR IT
FOR IT
FOR IT
Voters
probably aren't
giving "Good
Night" a Best
Picture or Best
Director win, so
they may
choose to
reward it here
instead.
This
geo-political
action-thriller is
too topical too
ignore.
Hollywood
seems to be
recognizing
left-leaning
films this year.
He set a record
for
screenwriting
nominations
with this pic.
Critics say it's
his best film in
years.
Woody's on a
roll.
The film
became a
surprise player
on the
precursor
circuit, with
many hailing it
as one of the
year's best
films.
"Crash" took
the WGA
award, and it
seems like the
screenplay
category will be
a great place
to honor
Haggis and the
film as a whole.
AGAINST IT
AGAINST IT
AGAINST IT
AGAINST IT
AGAINST IT
Some fault the
script for the
pic's bluntness
and reliance on
coincidence.
There have
definitely been
surprises in
this category
before.
The
performance of
David
Strathairn has
gotten all of
the acclaim so
far.  Will the
script be
remembered
on Oscar night?
"Syriana"
survived a
category snafu
-- it was
submitted as
an adaptation,
not an original
-- but will this
taint its
chances?
He's a genius,
no doubt, but
few would say
that "Match
Point"
deserves to win
when faced
against more
buzzworthy
competition.
Odd title,
quirky film,
small
production.
These are not
the usual
ingredients
that make up
an Oscar
winner.

AKIVA GOLDSMAN & TEAM, Cinderella Man
The Academy chose to ignore this one.

JUDD APATOW & STEVE CARELL, The 40-Year-Old Virgin
Hilarious as hell, and the Writer's Guild nominated it.

CRAIG BREWER, Hustle & Flow
Winning big at Sundance didn't increase its chances.

TERRENCE MALICK, The New World
A consolation nod was not in order.

MARTIN SHERMAN, Mrs. Henderson Presents
The pic didn't materialize into a big player.

THOMAS BEZUCHA, The Family Stone
Critics were hardly kind to this holiday dramedy.

JIM JARMUSCH, Broken Flowers
The Academy didn't feel like honoring an outsider.
