FOR IT
FOR IT
FOR IT
Lions Gate is
making a full
push for
"Crash," and it
took the big
prize at the
SAG awards --
so the large
actors' branch
digs it.
Ang Lee's
cowboy drama
is sweeping the
festival circuit
and positioning
itself as one of
the year's
top-tier indies.
It has prestige
everywhere.
Though small
in nature, the
pic has been
universally
acclaimed (and
even scored
some tech
nods).  A win is
not out of the
picture.
The haunting
Spielberg
drama was
able to cross
the finish line
by probably
the smallest of
margins.  It
must have lots
of fans.
This little indie
bucked the
odds and
scored 5 Oscar
nods -- and
that's in
addition to
mentions from
the PGA, SAG,
WGA, and DGA.
AGAINST IT
AGAINST IT
AGAINST IT
AGAINST IT
AGAINST IT
In contrast to
the grand
sweep of
"Brokeback,"
"Crash" feels
small.  It's
also rare for
Oscar to reward
contemporary
pics.
Let's be
serious:  The
Academy veers
liberal, but are
members
ready to
embrace a gay
love story?
Only time will
tell.
Too much
Clooney this
year?  What
with "Good
Night" and
"Syriana" in
simultaneous
release, voters
may have
overkill.
The film had
as many
detractors as it
did supporters,
and its Oscar
campaign got
off the ground
a bit late.  The
pic has a lot of
work ahead.
With 4 indies,
this is an
awfully "tiny"
lineup for Best
Picture.  It's
doubtful that
the Oscar will
go to the
smallest of the
small titles.

WALK THE LINE
Lots of Golden Globes, but it couldn't cross the finish line.

MATCH POINT
This Woody Allen gem didn't get much guild support.

A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE
David Cronenberg just isn't the Academy's cup of tea.

THE CONSTANT GARDENER
Good critical notices and lots of Golden Glove love.

KING KONG
Another Best Picture-winning epic from Peter Jackson?  Nope.

MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA
The reviews were okay, but it wasn't transcendental.

THE NEW WORLD
Reviewers called it a good -- but not great -- film.
