"The Departed" has Martin Scorsese going for it, "Babel" has a lot of
nominations going for it, "Letters From Iwo Jima" has Clint Eastwood
going for it, and "Little Miss Sunshine" has a boatload of precursors
(PGA, WGA, SAG) going for it. (Sadly, "The Queen" doesn't have
much going for it.) In the most wide-open year race since 2000, it's...
PREDICTION
Little Miss Sunshine
There really is no question here -- it's Marty's time, and none of the
other nominees have enough buzz to topple him (not even Clint).
People may assume that the Academy is just throwing him a bone
after so many years of losing, but he really does deserve it for "The
Departed."
PREDICTION
Martin Scorsese, The Departed
The Peter O'Toole sympathy vote doesn't seem to have materialized,
so it looks like the acting legend will be going 0/8 in competitive Oscar
wins. Forest Whitaker has won nearly every precursor award in sight,
so there's little suspense in whether he'll be taking home the trophy
on the 25th.
PREDICTION
Forest Whitaker, Last King of Scotland
The Helen Mirren train was unstoppable this year, so the British
actress will be taking home a long-deserved trophy for playing a
British monarch. I'm betting that her acceptance speech will be one
of the wittiest of the night -- or at least it should be after getting so
much practice.
PREDICTION
Helen Mirren, The Queen
The one off-the-wall prediction. If "Little Miss Sunshine" is destined to
win Best Picture as I'm predicting, it's gotta win at least one other big
award other than Best Original Screenplay. Given the lack of support
for "Dreamgirls" with its no-show in the top two categories, I'm
guessing Eddie Murphy just misses. Blame the "Norbit" ads.
PREDICTION
Alan Arkin, Little Miss Sunshine
Like Helen Mirren, there really was no stopping Jennifer Hudson this
year. But call me cynical, because I just can't see her branching off
into many more Oscar-y roles in the years ahead; this seems like a
one-time-only meshing of perfect performer with perfect role in a
perfect year. We'll see.
PREDICTION
Jennifer Hudson, Dreamgirls
It could be the year of Peter Morgan, since he wrote both "The Last
King of Scotland" and the nominated "The Queen," but I think that
Michael Arndt's script for "Little Miss Sunshine" will take the prize. If
so, the 3 wins for the family road comedy are probably among the
lowest on record for a Best Picture winner (if it does indeed win).
PREDICTION
Little Miss Sunshine
Since "The Departed" is the only script in this bunch that's also a Best
Picture nominee, it should easily win. However, wouldn't it be much
more fun if "Borat" was the victor and Sacha Baron Cohen came
onstage to do some sort of kooky act? Well, it's not gonna happen --
so rent the movie.
