SPIRIT:
STALLION...
DREAMWORKS

DreamWorks will try their
hardest not to lose after
winning big last year with
"Shrek."  This entry was
only modestly critically
received, though.
LILO &
STITCH
DISNEY

It didn't have the
greatest reviews, but it
was the best Disney
had to offer this year.
Will that cause them
two losses in a row?
ANIMATED FILM
"Spirited Away" wins as
predicted.  I can't believe
that the Academy was able
to get this right, since the
'toon was arguably the
least-seen and
least-buzzed-about of the
nominees.  But Hayao
Miyazaki's masterpiece
pulled through.  After this, I
had a feeling the night
would go well.
TREASURE PLANET
DISNEY
Apparently box office performance doesn't
prejudice the Animated Feature nominators,
who overlooked the dismal dollars of this dud.
ICE AGE
FOX
If the Disney movies
cancel each other out, this
big hit will win.
DIDN'T MAKE THE CUT THIS YEAR:
RETURN TO NEVERLAND
DISNEY
The studio's plate is already too full
with "Lilo," "Spirited Away," and
"Treasure Planet."  It also paled in
comparison to the original.
THE PRINCESS & THE PEA
N/A
This film was a surprise inclusion when
the Academy announced there were 17
eligible films (and thus 5 nominees).  but
who's seen it?
8 CRAZY NIGHTS
SONY
It's a rarity -- a Jewish holiday
film.  Has "Punch-Drunk
Love" raised Adam Sandler's
prestige enough?
THE POWERPUFF GIRLS MOVIE
WARNER BROS.
Why this bombed at the box office is sort of a
mystery.  The show has an especially large
teen and young adult following, and it looked
primed for success.  Now, it'll just be sidelined.
FOREIGN FILM
THE CRIME
OF FATHER
AMARO
MEXICO

This film really
shouldn't have made it.
 I question where it
succeeded artistically.
HERO
CHINA

Since all of this year's
big foreign films are
ineligible, it'll be up to
the smaller,
less-recognizable titles
("Hero," for instance)
to fill up the roster.
ZUS & ZO
NETHERLANDS

From what I gather, this
was a surprise inclusion in
the Best Foreign Film
race.  Without much buzz
attached, it may not have
what it takes to go all the
way for the win.
"Nowhere in Africa" wins as
predicted.  I have only seen "The
Crime if Father Amaro," and it
didn't deserve even to be
nominated.  The other contenders
have gotten mixed reviews, but
"Nowhere" seemed right up
Oscar's alley.

MAN WITHOUT A PAST
FINLAND

Finland hasn't always been the strongest contender
in this category.  It's surprising that "City of God"
and "8 Women" were omitted for this.

DOCUMENTARY

DAUGHTER FROM
DANANG

Political non-fiction films are always
strong contenders here, but in the
year of "Bowling for Columbine," it's
tough to see this Vietnam-themed pic
winning.
"Bowling for Columbine" wins as
predicted.  The most deserving
award of the night, as well as the
most electrifying speech.  Will
Michael Moore ever be invited
back?  Or nominated again?
WINGED MIGRATION

One of the most talked-about nature
documentaries of the year, it details the
seasonal flight of birds.
SPELLBOUND

A documentary about the
National Spelling Bee in
Washington.
PRISONER OF PARADISE

It will be tough for any of these non-fiction
films to compete with Michael Moore's classic,
no matter how serious the topic.

SPIRITED

DISNEY

Clearly this is the
"Waking Life" of 2002
-- a sophisticated
animation piece that
doesn't cater to the
kiddies.
JONAH: A VEGGIE-TALES MOVIE
ARTISAN
It fared better than expected at the box office.
But Artisan isn't a major player in the animation
field and the Veggies are better suited to their
origin -- on video.
BOWLING FOR
COLUMBINE

Far and away the most important film
of the year, despite whether or not
everything Michael Moore puts forth
is completely sensible.  How
in-your-face would it be if he won?
TWIN
TOWERS
THIS
CHARMING
MAN
THE
CHUBBCHUBBS!
ALI BABA & THE 40 THIEVES
N/A
This late-year animated qualifier, like some of
the others here, serves only to raise the
nomination count from 3 to 5; it's too small to
get noticed.
STUART LITTLE 2
SONY
This film likely has enough
animated sequences to qualify,
but its box office was way less
than the original's.
THE WILD THORNBERRYS
PARAMOUNT
Somewhat of a box office disappointment,
you can never count on TV-related
animated features to reap awards -- unless
you're talking about "South Park," that is.
NOWHERE IN AFRICA
GERMANY

A solid hit in its native land, it comes to America with decent reviews but
no buzz and the "never heard of it" factor.  It will need to sparkle during
its eventual release here.

APOLLO
Bill Plympton's odd
cartoon was released in
time, but did it fly under
the Academy radar?
HEY ARNOLD!  THE MOVIE
PARAMOUNT
Another of the Nickelodeon entries that's
probably better suited to TV.  But who
knows, "Jimmy Neutron" scored last year
in place of the stellar "Waking Life."
THE LIVING FOREST
N/A
The only foreign cartoon that
matters this year is the one that
should win -- "Spirited Away."
Others stand little chance.
EDEN
N/A
Another mysterious animated
qualifier.  What is it?  It serves
only to raise the nomination
count at this point.
