THE FIVE NOMINEES:
THE WINNER:
DJIMON
HOUNSOU
"IN AMERICA"
KEN
WATANABE
"THE LAST SAMURAI"
BENICIO
DEL TORO
"21 GRAMS"
ALEC
BALDWIN
"THE COOLER"
FOR HIM:
Career-best reviews have
greeted Baldwin since the
film opened.  He has
some very violently
memorable scenes.
His dark, disturbing,
and riveting turn in
"River" is the most
memorable among the
film's sizeable cast
After winning for
"Traffic," Del Toro
proved he was no
one-trick pony with
this gritty portrayal.
He has a very
sentimental and
uplifting role in the
film; he'll be easy to
sympathize with.
His nomination was a
shock.  Is there
enough support to
beat frontrunner
Robbins?
The actor is relatively
unknown, so he's going to
have to maintain a high
profile amid the
much-more-recognizable
contenders.
His politics may be held
against him, and the
nature of his role -- a
suspected child-killer --
is a big turn-off.
"21 Grams" was
basically an also-ran
this award season.
The fact that he got
this nod is enough.
An Oscar nomination for
a Baldwin?  The "careers"
of William and Stephen
may be a road block for
their more-acclaimed
brother.
NO NOM THIS YEAR:
PAUL
BETTANY
"MASTER & COMMANDER"
Will voters let him and wife
Jennifer Connelly be dual
nominees?  If overall support
is large enough...
PETER
SARSGAARD
"SHATTERED GLASS"
He's leading in the precursor
tally -- which is always good
-- but he still may be too
unknown for voters.
SEAN
ASTIN
"RETURN OF THE KING"
Samwise will be competing with
Aragorn, Frodo, and a host of
more down-to-earth (so to speak)
actors for a spot.

MALCOLM
McDOWELL
"THE COMPANY"
This film will have to be
a significant art house
hit in order to snag any
nominations.
VIGGO
MORTENSEN
"RETURN OF THE KING"
He's not in this film as much as
he was in "The Two Towers,"
and there's still a little bit of
category confusion.

KEVIN
BACON
"MYSTIC RIVER"
This category is so weak
that even his strong but
relatively small role just
might be enough.
EUGENE
LEVY
"A MIGHTY WIND"
His surprise victory at the
NYFCC awards could start
the ball rolling on his first
nomination.

ALBERT
FINNEY
"BIG FISH"
Voters just didn't take to "Big Fish"
this year, nominating only Danny
Elfman for his score.  Better luck
next time.

In his first English-language
role, Watanabe outshined
both Tom Cruise and the
average film he was in.  He's
memorable and likeable.

"MYSTIC RIVER"
RON

"HOUSE OF SAND & FOG"
If "House" is able to snag a
Best Picture nomination, he
could get pulled in with all the
other acclaim.
