THE FIVE NOMINEES:
THE WINNER:
JULIANNE
MOORE
"THE HOURS"
QUEEN
LATIFAH
"CHICAGO"
KATHY
BATES
"ABOUT SCHMIDT"
MERYL
STREEP
"ADAPTATION"
CATHERINE
ZETA-JONES
"CHICAGO"
Some say her quieter
turn in "The Hours"
was just as effective
as Kidman's and
Streep's.
"When You're Good to
Mama" was one of the
most cleverly
orchestrated songs in
the film...
She plays a feisty
mother-in-law-to-be
that grabs laughs in
every scene she's in.
It's her type of role.
Despite her usual dramatic
leanings, she grabbed the
biggest chuckles of the
awards season in this
hilariously offbeat dramedy.
She really is the star of
the show despite the
'supporting'
classification, and is the
lifeblood of picture.
AGAINST HER:
AGAINST HER:
AGAINST HER:
...but if voters are
going to vote for a
"Chicago" actress, it'll
be the more-acclaimed
Zeta-Jones.
THE LOWDOWN:
Catherine Zeta-Jones wins as expected.  Was the Academy forecasting this win by having her "Entrapment" co-star and
fellow countryman (sort of) Sean Connery hand out the award?  Zeta-Jones did a decent rendition of "I Move On" with
Queen Latifah earlier in the evening, but seemed to be the focus of the telecast with at least 15 reaction shots during the
entire show.  Were there not enough other actors for the cameras to pan to?  Fellow nominee Latifah accpeted her defeat
-- and "Chicago's" overall success -- rather graciously.
DIDN'T MAKE THE CUT THIS YEAR:
SAMANTHA
MORTON
"MINORITY REPORT"
Odd character, small
role, but mesmerizing
and memorable
performance.
PATRICIA
CLARKSON
"FAR FROM HEAVEN"
She's a vivid scene-stealer
backed by the New York
and National Society of
Film Critics.
MIRANDA
RICHARDSON
"SPIDER"
She plays three roles
in this Cronenberg
thriller; that'll make
her hard to forget.
EMILY
WATSON
"PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE"
She needed a Golden
Globe nod just to stay in
the game; it's under the
radar now.
BEBE
NEUWIRTH
"TADPOLE"
She was hilarious
in this modest
independent hit;
was it too tiny?
SUSAN
SARANDON
"IGBY GOES DOWN"
She had two noticeable
performances in award
contention this year, but
both were small.
CAMERON
DIAZ
"GANGS OF NEW YORK"
It was a valiant attempt,
but when the accent
was
there, it just didn't work.
No SAG nod, either.
MICHELLE
PFEIFFER
"WHITE OLEANDER"
The fact that she left
contention for so long
amid all the "Chicago"
ruckus hurts most.
EMILY
MORTIMER
"LOVELY & AMAZING"
Her full frontal nude
scene was heartbreaking
and amazing.  Release
date's a killer, though.

ORIGINAL S'PLAY
EDIE
FALCO
"SUNSHINE STATE"
The FYC ads have
started up, she got
some critics, but...it's
still a long shot.
FOR HER:
AGAINST HER:
If voters are going to
reward her, it's going
to be for "Far From
Heaven" -- her
signature role.
FOR HER:
AGAINST HER:
She doesn't appear in
the film until near its
end, and she's already
taken home an Oscar
before.
FOR HER:
Recent anti-Oscar
comments could cause a
backlash.  Despite her
record-setting 13 noms,
does she need 3
wins?
FOR HER:
Purists could claim she is
a co-lead and is
mis-categorized.  There
isn't much emotional heft
in the performance.
