SHOHREH

"HOUSE OF SAND & FOG"
PATRICIA
CLARKSON
"PIECES OF APRIL"
FOR HER:
FOR HER:
FOR HER:
Every line she delivers
gets a laugh; walking out
of the theater, hers is the
once performance that
sticks in your memory.
After turning in four fine
performances this year, Ms.
Clarkson finally has a shot at
the gold.  Could her body of
work equal a win?
AGAINST HER:
AGAINST HER:
Is the Academy really going
to honor such a low-budget
film?  Other characters in
the pic are ill-natured and
may detract from her.
Of the five women
nominated here, she's the
least-known contender.
That can't help when
Zellweger is already ahead.
NO NOM THIS YEAR:
SCARLETT
JOHANSSON
"LOST IN TRANSLATION"
She was probably #6 in this
race, losing out from
category confusion and
"Pearl Earring" votes.
MARIA
BELLO
"THE COOLER"
Though she has a Golden
Globe nomination, have
enough voters seen the
film?

RENEE
ZELLWEGER
"COLD MOUNTAIN"
LAURA
LINNEY
"MYSTIC RIVER"
She only has one big
scene in the movie, so
it probably won't be
enough for a nod.
LUDIVINE
SAGNIER
"SWIMMING POOL"
If ever there was a need
to nominate an ingenue or
most promising
newcomer, she's the one.
EMMA
THOMPSON
"LOVE ACTUALLY"
She co-stars in a
crowd-pleasing film, but look
at all of her competition.  It
won't happen.

MELISSA
LEO
"21 GRAMS"
It's a bravura performance;
she'll need a strong
campaign to stand out
among more famous faces.
KEISHA
CASTLE-HUGHES
"WHALE RIDER"
It's a charming little film, like
"Bend it Like Beckham" with
depth.  She was moved
shockingly to lead status.
AGAINST HER:
FOR HER:
AGAINST HER:
Is this a character or a
caricature?  Her win may
be in jeopardy with such
mild support for "Cold
Mountain."
FOR HER:
AGAINST HER:
Despite the film's
smallish nature her
searing motherly
thesping made the
final cut.
A movie about teen
melodrama might
not be the best
vehicle for
garnering Oscars.
HOPE
DAVIS
"AMERICAN SPLENDOR"
She couldn't even muster an
IFP nod for this role even
though the film garnered
many other nominations.
Her desperate walk
through the parade is a
chilling scene that
voters will definitely
remember.
In a quietly touching
performance, she perfectly
counterbalances Ben
Kinglsey's doggedly
domineering ways.
She won fairly
recently, and it's a
wonder she got here
at all after missing out
on Globe/SAG noms.
