FOR HER
FOR HER
FOR HER
FOR HER
In this
anything-goes
year for
supporting
performances,
Weisz has
been racking
up award after
award (SAG,
Golden Globe).
She has the
most
prominent
female role in
what's likely to
be the year's
Best Picture.
She could be
part of an
Oscar wave.
Small role, but
the critics sung
her praises
nonstop.
Beatrice
Straight and
Judi Dench
have won with
similar screen
time.
Adams had
one of the
earliest ad
campaigns in
the trades, and
she's been
racking up
precursors
since the
season began.
She was the
perfect, smart
counterpart to
Theron's
nominated
lead role.
Plus, she got
to remind
viewers of her
"Fargo" past.
AGAINST HER
AGAINST HER
AGAINST HER
AGAINST HER
AGAINST HER
Her film didn't
get a Best
Picture nod --
but the pics
from her
"Brokeback
Mountain" and
"Capote"
competition
did, however.
A former
"Dawson's
Creek" love
interest with an
Academy
Award?  I
guess Hilary
Swank
did have
a "90210"
past...
Still, it's truly a
blink-and-you'll
-miss-it role.
There's more
heft to the
characters
she's
nominated
against,
unfortunately.
Tiny box office,
few have seen
it, unknown
actress.  That
adds up to an
Oscar loss in
most years,
and it probably
will this year as
well.
She's won an
Oscar before,
and although
it's a pretty
good turn,
McDormand
used all of the
Oscar crutches
-- illness,
accent, etc.

SCARLETT JOHANSSON, Match Point
Just on the cusp yet again.  She'll make it someday...

MARIO BELLO, A History of Violence
For me, the one big snub of the morning.

LAURA LINNEY, The Squid & the Whale
She's was campaigned "supporting" but won some "lead" awards.

DIANE KEATON, The Family Stone
Absolutely no precursor love means no Oscar nod.

TONI COLLETTE, In Her Shoes
The studio needed to pick a category and stick with it.

GONG LI, Memoirs of a Geisha
Voters seemed mostly turned off by the film.

UMA THURMAN, The Producers
Critics ate this one alive, though Uma was mostly praised.
