"Cold Mountain" fared
well with a lot of these
tech awards, but just
couldn't pull through
with the Big One.  "Girl
With a Pearl Earring"
was also rewardingly
nominated.

The editing nominees
exhibited a little more of
a variety this year, and
didn't just simply reflect
the Best Picture
nominees.  But where
was "Kill Bill"?

THE NOMINEES:
For the first time in as
many years as I can
remember, John Williams
was not be nominated --
because he didn't score a
film this year!  Will
longtime Tim Burton
collaborator Danny
Elfman finally get his due
with "Big Fish"?  Or will
it be "Cold Mountain"?

The art direction Oscar
usually goes to a period
piece, since voters must feel
that it's more difficult to
create sets from years past.
Thus, none of the films
nominated are contemporary;
they range from hundreds of
years back for "Pearl
Earring" to just a few
decades for "Seabiscuit."

Ngila Dickson pulls out
two nominations, but
which one would voters
likely go for?  I'm
having a hunch that a lot
of these awards are
gonna go to "Girl With a
Pearl Earring" since it's
the one true underdog.

The big omission

"The Return of the King" is a shoo-in
for the win.  I was somewhat shocked
that "X2" didn't earn any technical nods
-- especially here, where it would've
made the most sense.  It's tough to
deny the technical skill of that movie.

This year, there were actually
(!) a few films that had songs
featured in them appropriately,
like the well-received comedy
"A Mighty Wind."  Eugene
Levy and Catherine O'Hara's
performance will be one of the
highlights of the ceremony for
me.  I don't know if it could
pull off a win, though.
TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE
"TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE" --
BENOIT CHAREST & SYLVAIN CHOMET

"...END OF THE RAINBOW" --
M. McKEAN & A. O'TOOLE

The louder the movie, the
more likely it is to get a

of these films were
significant hits at the box

Some more complete guesswork.  I
thought that "King" would be a
shoo-in here, too, though.
